Molteni & C D.154.2 Armchair
Collection: Heritage
Type: Armchair with armrests
Designer: Gio Ponti
D. 154. 2 is an armchair upholstered in fabric.
Upholstery is also available in leather.
The armchair, on the other hand, was designed for one of the projects closest to Gio Ponti’s heart, the villa of the Planchart collectors in Caracas (1953-57). It is part of the Gio Ponti Collection, which was curated by Molteni&C under the artistic direction of Studio Cerri & Associati.
The architecture reflected the ideas he had gathered during his trips to Latin America in 1952-53. Today the armchair, which is like a cosy shell, has a rigid polyurethane frame, a soft polyurethane counter-frame and a cushion, and is upholstered in the Molteni&C textile range, with the option of differentiating the three component parts. In 2016 this "love chair" won the prestigious Wallpaper Design Awards and became a Molteni&C icon.
Molteni&C is re-examining its own history with an eye to the future. The 80!Molteni exhibition, the creation of the company’s historical archive and its recently inaugurated Molteni Museum have provided an opportunity for revival, from the origins of modernity.
Intriguing traces have emerged from a past that turns out to be contemporary, ripe for a re-think today. Unique pieces that can step straight out of their museum showcases and into our contemporary homes.
This mid-century lovechair was inspired by designer Gio Ponti's trips to Latin America in the 1950s. A winner of the Wallpaper Design Award, today the armchair is one of Molteni&C's most beloved pieces. The shell-like structure envelops the sitter in a soft cushion which is one of three customizable components to personalize the chair in range of styles. A signature piece for a residential living space.
