Sergio Rodrigues Tonico Armchair
Mid-Century Modern Tonico Armchair by Sergio Rodrigues, 1963
This beautiful Tonico lounge chair by the acclaimed designer Sergio Rodrigues is structured in solid Imbuia wood. The armchair features natural fabric loose cushions and its iconic black synthetic leather headrest is strapped to the chair by belts.
Playful and comfortable in its iconic design, the Tonico armchair exemplifies Sergio Rodrigues' mid•century design. Its signature element is a headroll above the upholstered back and seat, all mounted atop a Freijó wood base. The piece is named after the designer’s brother•in•law; as Rodrigues explained “he sat in the chair and said: I do not want anything else, just this here. It's beautiful.”

"Tonico was made in the period of the Chifruda armchair and had similarities with the "Poltrona Mole". It is a piece of furniture that I imagined to be popular, it could be used, for example, in student housing. Many units were sold, mostly for people who had cottages, vacation homes, beach houses and such. It was not only to meet the needs of people with few financial possibilities, but to give simplicity and the maximum comfort that was possible with those drawings. I gave this name in honor of my brother-in-law Tonico, because he fell in love with the chair. He was a person who was not outgoing in taste, and he sat in the chair and said, 'I do not want anything else, just this here, this is beautiful.' That is, he considered beautiful, with aesthetic quality, a chair that is good and comfortable to sit in." (Sergio Rodrigues)
Tonico" lounge chair and ottoman set, designed by Sergio Rodrigues around 1963, a remarkable piece of Brazilian modernist design. Crafted from stained freijó wood, the structure is robust yet elegant, perfectly complemented by fabric cushions and a luxurious natural leather headrest. The Tonico chair was created during the same period as the Chifruda armchair and shares design elements with the iconic "Poltrona Mole". Sergio envisioned this chair as a piece that would be widely accessible, suitable even for student housing. The goal was not only to meet the needs of people with few financial possibilities, but also to provide the utmost simplicity and comfort through its design. He named the chair after his brother-in-law, Tonico, who fell in love with its style. He wasn't someone with extravagant tastes, yet when he sat in the chair, he said, 'I don't need anything else, this is perfect.' He saw beauty and quality in its comfort and simplicity. Today, the Tonico chair, especially as a complete set with its matching ottoman, is a rare and sought-after piece, representing the essence of Brazilian modernist design.
Sergio Rodrigues (September 22, 1927 – September 1, 2014) was a visionary Brazilian architect and designer who, alongside Joaquim Tenreiro and José Zanine Caldas, revolutionised Brazilian design by transforming it into a globally recognised industrial art form. His career peaked in the 1950s and 1960s during the modernist movement, where he masterfully integrated the Brazilian identity into his furniture.
